Breaking free from yourself during this rave
In a night-time ‘rave’, seven young urban dancers find what they are looking for. A sense of togetherness and closeness. They meet on an empty stage, with the audience in a semi-circle very close, so that you can see the dancers sweat and hear them breathe.
Three years ago, Krave already toured to full halls with enthusiastic audiences. Also at Tweetakt. Now the performance is being performed again. It is a collaboration between two Utrecht companies: theatre group DOX, which worked with young talent from (sub)cultures and SHIFFT, the dance group of choreographer Jasper van Luijk. He got the idea for this dance piece during corona time, when the clubs were closed for a long time. Young people in particular missed the connection with others. The performance is about what a night of dancing can give you. How you can forget about time, and break away from all your responsibilities. Jasper: ‘How you can long for the moment when you collectively almost rise.’
The structure of Krave follows the course of a rave. Sole dancers who are entangled in themselves, meet each other, join the audience in the shared ecstasy, until the day breaks and the group falls apart again. The music track that gradually whips things up, from calm sequences to hard-hitting beats, comes from Abdelhadi Baaddi. Like Van Luijk, an experienced raver, who knows how steamy the interaction between a DJ and the dance floor can be. ‘Life is celebrated here with conviction’, wrote a theatre critic about Krave. ‘Sizzling and passionate. You would like to take part in this exuberant party.’
