A shark in a pool…
There is a colored inflatable pool at the entrance of Theater Kikker. On a summer day, such pools are in the garden or on the sidewalk: great for small children to play in. But it is better not to jump in here. There is a shark swimming in the pool. You only see the dorsal fin of the shark sticking out above the water. And the water in which it is spinning is pitch black.
Artist Bas de Boer called this work of art ‘Great White Black Oil’. ‘Great white’ is English for the great white shark, which is also called ‘man shark’ because it attacks people on American beaches. All kinds of horror films have been made about this scary sea creature. The children’s pool in which Bas de Boer lets him swim around is of course much too small for the enormous shark. And its dorsal fin is black. Perhaps because of the black water in the pool, the ‘Black Oil’ from the title. This shark is swimming in black oil. And oil in the sea is one of the reasons why there are fewer and fewer great white sharks. So who should we be afraid of? The shark that attacks people when they get too close, or the human who pollutes the seawater?
