On holiday to a floating island

A raft is floating in the water around Fort Ruigenhoek. There is a palm tree in a pot on it, with two cheap plastic garden chairs next to it. An inflatable boat is floating next to the raft. On the side, a sign points to the raft. ‘Paradise’ is written on this piece of cardboard. As if the raft is a tropical island, where you can go on holiday. There is also a sign with a QR code on the side. An invitation to use your smartphone to check the fish restaurant that is apparently part of the floating paradise. But that restaurant does not exist at all.

The imaginary holiday destination was created by artists Herman Lamers and Ivo van der Vat, who work together under the name LAVART. Their impoverished ‘paradise’ is a funny reversal of the luxury destinations that holidaymakers who can afford it fly to. The inflatable boat is reminiscent of refugees from poor countries who try to reach the rich West by sea in such boats.
