Wrapped in ropes

Artist Jake Kelly paints with rope. In a bunker at Fort Ruigenhoek, you can see how he draws frayed lines with thick, black ropes across the wall and through the space, as if they were made with a paintbrush. The ropes hang together with knots. It looks like the spider’s web of a giant spider.

Kelly first made paintings with paint. He gradually left more and more out, until only the lines remained. Then, away from the canvas, he started making works of art with lines of wooden slats or rope. He has made a complete study of the ways in which people used to make rope, and how they used it for all kinds of work. And he learned all the knotting techniques there are. He himself uses rope to create fantastic images, which also show the viewer what a beautiful material this actually is. Kelly searches for found and discarded materials for his works of art, because he is against waste, and believes that art should be sustainable. He believes it is important that art is understandable to everyone. And when you look at his giant spider web, you feel like making a painting with rope yourself.
