critiques human interference in nature and explores socio-political narratives
The large painting on the wall is not painted with paint. The artist has covered the white canvas with plastic in all shapes and sizes: sandwich bags, cups, pieces of blue garbage bags and supermarket bags, parts of broken appliances. It is a bumpy landscape. And that landscape moves. The canvas is double and is on a roll at the top and bottom. When this artwork is on, the painting rolls from top to bottom all the time. Very quickly. And when you lie down under it, it is as if a waterfall of plastic is falling on your head. ‘Plastic waterfall’ is the funny title of this artwork.
Hetok Getachew, an Ethiopian artist who lives and works in Germany, studied physics before going to art school in Addis Ababa. He combined his interests in art and physics when he added the dimensions of time and space to his two-dimensional paintings. With his videos, installations and performances he wants to make the public think about important themes that are currently going on. Such as the pollution of the sea and the rivers by all the discarded plastic that ends up there.
