Black depth of a bulging hole

Someone has dug a very deep hole. Next to the hole you can see stones that the digger has removed. So the hole has been dug in the pavement, or under the tiles in the garden. The shovel that was used to make the hole is next to it. Perhaps the digger has just finished, or has taken a break. What is very strange is that the hole does not go into the ground. It protrudes from the wall. You do not look down into the black depths, the hole is right in front of you. As if it has risen up and tilted, so that you can see it better.
Artist Stijn ter Braak can recreate things so well that they seem real. For example, he once completely recreated his own room, with everything in it. Only when you get close do you see that he has cobbled together all the stuff in that room – his table, his guitar, the waste bin, the books in the cupboard – himself. Even with the hole that comes out of the wall in a bunker at Fort Ruigenhoek, your brain does not understand what your eyes are actually looking at. It is not as heavy as you think. It is made of old mattresses and polystyrene. For all his artworks, Stijn only uses discarded junk and materials that he finds on the street. He says about this: `I work with what is available. If I lived in the countryside, I might work with cow dung, or sand. But I live in the city and this is what the city has to offer me.’
