Everyone secretly dreams about it at some point: participating in a talent show and being the very best. But who actually decides who has talent and who doesn’t? And whether your performance is good, or cool, or beautiful? Art can be ugly too, or messy, can’t it? And a failed little act that doesn’t seem to make sense at all might be far more beautiful than what is applauded on television as a ‘success’.
In this delightfully confusing, strange and extremely funny performance, the entire audience comes to audition. No explanation is given for what exactly they are auditioning for. All the children and parents in the auditorium are given a number. From a megaphone on stage, a voice calls out numbers and gives bizarre audition assignments. And no matter how enthusiastically the spectators respond, it is the voice that decides who gets to stay and who has to leave. It seems friendly, but holds all the power. Until three actors, who are also there to audition, have had enough. They revolt, and when they show what art can be too, a hilarious chaos breaks loose. Even a turd that ends up on stage is suddenly admired as something beautiful.
Guest director Julian Hetzel continues, at Theatre Artemis, his exploration into what art actually is, and into creativity within anarchy and destruction. His first performance for a young audience, released in 2024, was enthusiastically received by both audience and press, and appeared on many critics’ lists of the most impressive performances of that year. Now it is back on tour. And at Tweetakt!
