Imagine this: you are a disco ball. Hanging from the ceiling. You sparkle. Kind of like a sun that never sets. The moment someone shines a light on you, you fill the whole room with light. Everyone admires you. Except: you don’t want to be the centre of attention. You would much rather disappear into a corner.
Now imagine this: you are standing on a diving board. You don’t dare to jump. Or imagine this: suddenly you see people in love everywhere around you. Imagine this: you are Milo, a child. You live in the well‑behaved, tidy little town of Miezemokkerveen. You sparkle too. You would love nothing more than to sing all day long. But everyone thinks you should ‘just act normal’. Because, according to the people of Miezemokkerveen, you are odd enough already. You have learned that standing out is dangerous.
De Doodsbange Discobal is a theatrical, funky song programme about wanting to make yourself small. Or very big. In a series of groovy, joyfully disruptive songs, Mats Hoogland explores what it really means to stand out. Whether you should run away from it, whether you should celebrate it. A delightful first introduction to the colourful disco genre. Everyone is welcome to sing and dance along.
Actor and theatre‑maker Mats Hoogland graduated in 2024 from the Amsterdam Academy of Theatre and Cabaret. He writes, produces and performs musical theatre productions. He created this youth performance especially for Festival Tweetakt, together with composer Lucas Vermeer and three funk musicians.
