These displayed figurines look just like Haribo gummy bears. It was these tasty gummy sweets that visual artist Milena Anna Bouma was reminded of when she saw an ancient figurine.
It was found during an archaeological excavation. It is a small bear, made of amber. Archaeologists believe it was an amulet, which centuries ago was meant to bring people good luck when hunting wild animals. In the coloured glass figurines that Milena Anna Bouma made, she enlarged the bear and combined the shape of the ancient amulet with that of the Haribo sweets. They have become ‘archaeological sweets’.
Milena Anna Bouma (1994) completed her Fine Arts studies at the Rietveld Academy in 2018. In her work, she investigates how everyday objects, in a different form and context, and with alternative materials, can acquire a new meaning. She often gives the factor of time a role in this.
