On the stage there is a miniature version of the theatre hall. It has been recreated down to the smallest detail: from the dark‑blue velvet curtains to the emergency exit sign above the door. Two performers bring this tiny theatre to life, from the side of the stage and from above.
At times they whisper to one another. It is funny and magical. But there are no human figures performing in their little theatre. They show what happens when humans are no longer there. Branches and plants grow through the cracks in the walls. Animals cautiously explore the space. Birds fly in. The back wall slowly collapses. Eventually, everything is flooded by giant waves.
In the fantastic, often wordless performances of Plankton, humans never play the leading role. Actors are there to move objects and shift pieces of scenery. In this way, theatre‑makers Hendrik Kegels and Sonja van Ojen reveal the importance of things and of the natural world around us. In their previous, widely acclaimed production productie Er rent een berg voorbij, they imagined the beginning of life on Earth. Now they leap centuries ahead in time — in large steps yet gradually, and as always beautifully and meticulously designed.
